Say what now?

I had forgotten how funny my parents could be. These recent attempts at a regular weekly Sunday night dinner out on the town allowed for much conversation to be had in the car. Today we were discussing my mother's naivete and her propensity to believe everything she read/heard on the news. Coincidentally, before Dad had returned home from work, mother came up with a random theory about why something happened. It was the latest in a whole line of ridiculous ideas, no doubt fuelled by all the miracle cures being promoted in the Chinese news articles and health&beauty shows she follows.

Anyway, as it turns out, my father is also... not exactly naive, but extremely vulnerable and open to conspiracy theories.

Dinner was at a Japanese restaurant and we spoke about the food on the way home. I'm not sure how the conversation spiralled out of control from there onwards but it was the funniest thing I'd heard all week. It was the lethal combination of half-baked ideas and incorrect translating of Vietnamese and Chinese into English. The conclusion was that USA was this Big Brother sort of gangster boss that was responsible for a dispute between China and Japan which was quickly escalating to war-sized dimensions. Apparently what with USA being practically bankrupt, they were trying to get in on the Asian market, and so were indirectly attacking China through Japan by way of a tug-o-war over a small fishing island. That technically belonged to Taiwan. Japan was stationing warships around the island and China was throwing a tizzy. As far as I can tell, they are simply at the badmouthing stage at the moment, though who knows when or how that will change. Sometime during this discussion, there was also mention of Philippines, weapons trading, Vietnam's shiftiness, and the year 1962.

I've yet to read/watch Hetalia: Axis Powers, but I can see the potential appeal in personification of countries haha.

Tonight's restaurant was Shyun in Carnegie, complete with good food, a ninja waiter, and a small toddler with grabby hands at the next table. Among the things sampled were the Katsu don, Una Don (grilled eel), Chicken Katsu Curry, Niku Udon (beef), and takoyaki, gyoza and the sushi combo. Mm, my only regret was forgetting how big of a serving the Katsu Curry tended to be.

Ninja waiter: The restaurant is set up with a front room of tables, the cash register at midway point, the kitchens and then a back room of tables accessed through a side corridor. This particular waiter greeted us as we got up to leave the back and made our way to the middle. Once there and waiting to pay, we look up to see him coming toward us and greeting us again on the way to the kitchens with empty dishes from the front table area. Sneaky fella.
